Higher Technical Qualifications equip students for the modern jobs market – apply today for 24/25 study

A South Yorkshire collaboration between further and higher education fuels the roll out of Higher Technical Qualifications

The joint agreement between Sheffield Hallam University and four South Yorkshire's Further Education colleges – Barnsley College, DN Colleges Group, RNN Group, and The Sheffield College – is addressing the challenge of providing skills across the region. At the centre is the delivery of the new Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) and a commitment to give learners the skills wanted in today's job market.

Following on from level 3 studies such as A levels or T Levels, HTQs are level 4 and 5 qualifications such as higher national certificates, higher national diplomas, and foundation degrees. HTQs provide a route to secure, well-paid and long-term careers, for both students beyond the age of 18 and adults looking for a change of direction or new skills.

Digital HTQs were launched in September 2022 and a full rollout of 15 occupational sectors will be completed next year, revolutionising education provision and giving learners the skills and employability demanded by industry.

The Government's Higher Technical Education Skills Injection Fund has provided £1.3 million to support the joint effort to deliver these HTQs regionally. Higher Technical Qualifications at level 4 and level 5 will help learners in South Yorkshire currently undertaking TLevels and other level 3 courses onto level 4 and 5 study and beyond. It also links them to the upcoming Lifelong Learning Entitlement and increases the awareness of Higher Technical Qualifications in the region’s communities.

The qualifications are backed by employers which means there is assurance for learners that they provide the skills wanted in the workplace. Their quality is guaranteed because they are also approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education. The same student finance options provided for Degree level study are also available, giving learners further confidence to continue in education.

HTQs are now available to study in South Yorkshire. To find out more about what is available within the South Yorkshire College Partnership Group, please visit the links below:
